Facebook removes racist page in Australia after public outcry

Facebook has deleted a ‘racist’ page created by 16-year-old boy in Australia after a public outcry. The controversial page named ‘The Aboriginal Memes’  marked Aboriginal people in Australia as drunks and welfare cheats.

Concerned people across the country called an online pitition for the imidiate removal of the page and generated thousands of signatures.

“The page Controversial Humor Aboriginal Memes is an attack on the Aboriginal people ofAustraliaand violates this term,” the petition stated.

In a statement to local media the social giant said: “We recognise the public concern that controversial meme pages that Australians have created on Facebook have caused.”

“We believe that sharing information, and the openness that results, invites conversation, debate and greater understanding.

“At the same time, we recognise that some content that is shared may be controversial, offensive, or even illegal in some countries,” added Facebook.

Australian Communications Minister Stephen Conroy has also condemned the page saying: “I think it’s absolutely inappropriate,” he told ABC television.
